Frequently asked questions
How should I compare two AI models?
Start with the token rates on both sides, but weight them by your own traffic: input price dominates retrieval workloads while output price dominates generation and agent loops, so the cheaper model on a blended figure is not always cheaper for you. Then check the context window against the largest request you need to send, and use benchmarks last, to break a tie between options you have already priced.
Is the most expensive model always the best?
No. Price tracks the compute a model burns per token, which correlates with capability on hard reasoning and coding work but says nothing about routine tasks. For classification, extraction, summarisation and routing, models many times cheaper are frequently indistinguishable in output quality.
Where do these numbers come from?
Token rates are the prices each provider publishes, and benchmark figures are as reported by the provider or a public leaderboard. Blended rates and job costs are calculated comparison metrics, labelled as such wherever they appear. Nothing on these pages is estimated to fill a gap, a value we do not hold is shown as unavailable.
Other ways to narrow the field
Matchups are limited to models with a curated profile and sourced benchmarks, so every comparison has real data on both sides. Prices checked 12 August 2026.
