Are AI API prices falling?
Less consistently than people assume. Across the 376 changes we have recorded since 3 May 2026, there were 220 cuts and 156 increases, and the average move was -0.9%: close to flat. Headline new-model launches are often cheaper than the models they replace, but existing models get repriced in both directions, so a model you already depend on may well have got more expensive.
How far back does this price history go?
To 3 May 2026, when we started recording field-level changes. Anything before that date is not in the log; we would rather state the limit than imply a longer record than we have.
How are price changes detected?
A scheduled job re-reads provider and router pricing every day and writes a row whenever a tracked field (input, output or cached input) differs from the last recorded value. Each entry keeps the old value, the new value and the timestamp, so the change is auditable rather than inferred.
Why would an AI model get more expensive?
Introductory pricing expiring is the most common reason: a model launched at a promotional rate moves to its standard rate on a fixed date. Others include a provider reclassifying a model into a different tier, changing how long-context requests are billed, or withdrawing a discount. It is worth checking before assuming a rate you priced against months ago still holds.
