Tesla is the electric-vehicle maker whose ambitions increasingly center on real-world AI: its Full Self-Driving software, the Optimus humanoid robot, and the large-scale compute and data operation behind them. Led by Elon Musk, Tesla frames itself as an AI and robotics company as much as an automaker, and its fleet gives it one of the largest real-world training-data pipelines in existence.
Founded in 2003 and led by Elon Musk since its early years, Tesla built the most valuable automaker in the world around electric vehicles, then turned that platform into an AI project. Its vehicles collect enormous quantities of real-world driving data used to train its vision-based autonomy system.
Full Self-Driving is Tesla's marquee AI effort, an end-to-end neural approach to driving, and the company has extended its ambitions to robotaxis and to Optimus, a humanoid robot intended for factory and general labor. Both depend on large-scale training infrastructure, which Tesla has pursued through both NVIDIA GPUs and its in-house Dojo program.
Tesla's AI story is entangled with Musk's broader ecosystem, including xAI, with which it shares talent and, at times, technology discussions. Its combination of a deployed fleet, robotics ambition, and manufacturing scale makes it one of the most-watched players in embodied, real-world AI.
