Elon Musk
CEO, xAI & Tesla
Elon Musk is the founder and CEO of xAI, CEO of Tesla, and an OpenAI co-founder who became one of its sharpest critics. Through xAI's Grok models, the Colossus supercomputer, and Tesla's real-world AI, he is a major force across the AI landscape.
Notable for
Musk co-founded companies including Zip2, X.com (which became PayPal), SpaceX, and Tesla, and helped found OpenAI in 2015, providing early funding before departing its board in 2018 amid disagreements over direction and control. He later sued OpenAI over its shift toward a for-profit structure.
In 2023 he launched xAI to build what he calls maximally truth-seeking AI, shipping the Grok model family and standing up the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis at record speed. In 2025 he merged xAI with X (formerly Twitter), combining the model lab with a social platform's data and distribution.
Musk also drives real-world AI at Tesla through Full Self-Driving, the Optimus humanoid robot, and the Dojo compute effort. His ability to raise tens of billions for GPUs and to move engineering talent across his companies makes him a singular, if polarizing, figure in the AI buildout.
