xAI
Elon Musk's frontier lab building Grok on the Colossus supercomputer, merged with X.
xAI is Elon Musk's AI company, founded in 2023 to build "maximally truth-seeking" AI and best known for the Grok model family. It merged with X (formerly Twitter) in 2025, giving its models a direct consumer distribution channel and a real-time data feed. Its Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, assembled at unprecedented speed, made xAI a case study in how fast frontier-scale compute can be stood up.
Elon Musk founded xAI in July 2023, two years after leaving OpenAI's board and amid public disputes over its direction. The company recruited researchers from DeepMind, OpenAI, and Tesla, and shipped its first Grok model within months, positioning it as a less-filtered alternative tightly integrated with the X platform.
xAI's defining infrastructure feat is Colossus, a Memphis, Tennessee supercomputer whose first 100,000-GPU phase was brought online in months rather than years, and which has continued expanding toward multi-hundred-thousand-GPU scale. Grok models are distributed through X subscriptions, a standalone app, an API, and cloud partners, with Grok's image and reasoning capabilities iterating rapidly.
In March 2025 xAI acquired X in an all-stock deal, formally combining the model lab with the social platform's data, distribution, and compute demand. The combined entity has raised tens of billions of dollars in debt and equity to fund GPU purchases, and draws on the broader Musk ecosystem — including engineering ties to Tesla — for talent and infrastructure experience.
