Anthropic
AI safety-focused lab behind the Claude model family, backed by Amazon, Google, and enterprise adoption.
Anthropic is a San Francisco AI lab founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei. It builds the Claude family of models with an explicit safety-first research agenda, and has become the enterprise counterweight to OpenAI — particularly strong in coding, agents, and business API usage. Amazon and Google are its largest backers, and its compute footprint spans AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and, since late 2025, Microsoft Azure.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 when Dario Amodei, OpenAI's former VP of research, left with his sister Daniela and a group of colleagues to build a lab where safety research and frontier capability development were inseparable. Its signature techniques — constitutional AI and a public responsible-scaling policy — became reference points for how labs discuss catastrophic-risk mitigation.
The Claude model family is Anthropic's sole product line, delivered through its API, claude.ai, and the Claude Code agentic coding tool. Claude models earned a durable reputation among developers for coding and long-horizon agentic work, making Anthropic the revenue leader in enterprise API spend even as OpenAI dominates consumer usage.
Its capital structure reads as a map of hyperscaler competition: Amazon has invested $8 billion and builds dedicated Trainium capacity for Anthropic under Project Rainier, Google is both investor and TPU supplier at gigawatt scale, and a late-2025 agreement added Azure compute alongside investments from Microsoft and NVIDIA. That multi-cloud posture is deliberate — Anthropic avoids exclusive dependence on any single backer.
