Dario Amodei

Trained as a physicist with a PhD from Princeton, Amodei moved into AI via Baidu’s research group under Andrew Ng and then Google Brain. He joined OpenAI in 2016 and rose to vice president of research, leading work on GPT-2 and GPT-3 and co-developing the human-feedback techniques that later made chatbots viable.

In 2021 he left with his sister Daniela and a group of colleagues to found Anthropic, betting that safety research and interpretability could coexist with frontier-scale ambition. The company’s Claude models became a leading choice for enterprise, coding, and agent workloads, backed by multibillion-dollar investments from Google and Amazon.

Amodei has become one of the industry’s most-read commentators through essays such as Machines of Loving Grace and his public warnings about AI’s economic disruption. His positions on export controls, compute scaling, and model pricing — Anthropic runs one of the largest paid API businesses in AI — give him outsized influence over how frontier intelligence is priced and sold.
