Databricks

Data and AI platform unifying analytics, governance, and model building on the lakehouse.

Founded
2013
Headquarters
San Francisco, California, US

Databricks is a data-and-AI platform built around the "lakehouse" architecture, unifying data warehousing, analytics, and machine learning. It helps enterprises build and deploy AI on their own data with governance and security, and its acquisition of MosaicML brought foundation-model training and the open DBRX model into its stack. It is one of the largest private software companies in the world.

Founded in 2013 by the creators of Apache Spark, Databricks commercialized large-scale data processing and later unified analytics and ML into the lakehouse — combining the flexibility of data lakes with the management features of warehouses. Its Unity Catalog governs data and AI assets across the enterprise.

The 2023 acquisition of MosaicML added efficient foundation-model training and led to DBRX, an open model, plus Mosaic AI tools for building and serving custom models on enterprise data. Databricks positions itself as the place to build AI where the data already lives, addressing governance and privacy concerns that keep enterprises from sending data to external APIs.

Backed by some of the largest private-market rounds in software history at a valuation in the tens of billions, Databricks competes with Snowflake in data and with cloud AI platforms in model building. Its enterprise footprint makes it a major distribution channel for AI adoption.
