AI21 Labs is a Tel Aviv-based AI company founded in 2017 by Yoav Shoham, Ori Goshen, and Mobileye founder Amnon Shashua — one of the oldest independent LLM labs still operating. It built early GPT-3-era competitors (the Jurassic series) and the Wordtune writing assistant before pioneering Jamba, a hybrid Mamba-Transformer architecture optimized for long context and efficiency. Its focus today is enterprise AI systems where reliability matters more than raw scale.

AI21 was founded in 2017, predating the transformer-scaling boom, by Stanford professor emeritus Yoav Shoham, entrepreneur Ori Goshen, and Amnon Shashua. Its Jurassic models were among the first commercial alternatives to OpenAI's API, and Wordtune gave it an early consumer footprint in AI-assisted writing.

The Jamba family, introduced in 2024, combined structured state-space (Mamba) layers with transformer attention — a genuine architectural departure that delivers long-context throughput advantages, released with open weights alongside commercial versions. AI21 has since concentrated on enterprise "AI systems" such as its Maestro planning and orchestration layer, arguing that deterministic control around models beats ever-larger monoliths for business tasks.

Its investors include Google and NVIDIA, and its models distribute through AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Azure. As a mid-size independent lab, AI21 occupies a distinctive niche: architectural innovation and enterprise reliability rather than frontier-scale consumer competition.
