Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992 and spent two decades in its enterprise and cloud divisions, ultimately running the server and tools business that became Azure. Named CEO in February 2014, he refocused Microsoft on cloud and subscriptions, reviving the company’s growth and culture.

His defining wager was OpenAI: an initial $1 billion investment in 2019 grew into a partnership reported at roughly $13 billion that made Azure the home of OpenAI’s training and inference for years and put Microsoft first to market with Copilot products across GitHub, Office, and Windows.

In 2024 he hired Mustafa Suleyman to run consumer AI, and in 2025 Microsoft and OpenAI restructured their agreement, with Microsoft holding a large stake in OpenAI’s public benefit corporation while both sides gained more independence. With one of the biggest AI capital-expenditure programs in history and its own Maia silicon effort, Microsoft under Nadella is both the largest customer and a growing competitor of its most famous partner.
