Jeff Dean is the chief scientist of Google and Google DeepMind, and one of the most influential engineers in computing history. He co-created the infrastructure — MapReduce, TensorFlow, and the TPU program — on which much of modern AI runs.
Notable for
Dean joined Google in 1999 and became legendary for building the foundational systems behind Google Search and its infrastructure, including MapReduce, Bigtable, and Spanner. His engineering influence at the company is so storied that it spawned a genre of internet folklore.
He co-founded Google Brain in 2011, co-created the TensorFlow deep-learning framework, and helped drive the development of the Tensor Processing Unit — Google's custom AI silicon that made it the only frontier lab training flagship models entirely on in-house chips. His research spans distributed systems and large-scale neural networks.
As chief scientist across Google and Google DeepMind, Dean helps steer the technical direction behind the Gemini models and Google's AI infrastructure, keeping him central to the vertically integrated stack that gives Google its cost advantage in AI.
