A chess master in childhood and co-designer of the hit game Theme Park as a teenager, Hassabis studied computer science at Cambridge and completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at UCL. He co-founded DeepMind in 2010 with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, selling it to Google in 2014 while preserving an unusual degree of research autonomy.

DeepMind produced a run of landmark results under his leadership: AlphaGo’s 2016 defeat of Lee Sedol, AlphaZero, and AlphaFold, which effectively solved protein-structure prediction and earned Hassabis a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was knighted in 2024 for services to artificial intelligence.

Since the 2023 merger of Google Brain and DeepMind, Hassabis has run Google DeepMind as a single frontier lab, delivering the Gemini model family that anchors Google’s AI products and cloud pricing. His combination of scientific credibility and command of one of the world’s largest compute fleets makes him a defining figure in the AI economy.
