Safe Superintelligence

Ilya Sutskever's lab pursuing safe superintelligence as its only product — no interim releases.

Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) is the lab founded in June 2024 by Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's co-founder and former chief scientist, together with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. Its premise is radical: one goal, one product — safe superintelligence — with no commercial releases along the way. Despite shipping nothing, it raised billions of dollars at a valuation reported in the tens of billions, making it the purest bet on research talent in the industry.

SSI was founded months after Sutskever's departure from OpenAI, which followed his role in the November 2023 board crisis. The founding announcement was a single page: the company would pursue safe superintelligence directly, insulated from "management overhead or product cycles," with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.

Investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Greenoaks, and Alphabet backed the thesis, and SSI struck compute arrangements that include Google Cloud TPUs — a notable choice in an NVIDIA-dominated field. Co-founder Daniel Gross departed for Meta's superintelligence effort in mid-2025, leaving Sutskever as the lab's singular public figure.

SSI publishes no papers, ships no models, and gives no demos, so its significance is structural: it is the strongest evidence that capital markets will fund frontier AI research on reputation alone, and its recruiting competes directly with OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic for a small pool of elite researchers.
