SoftBank Group
Masayoshi Son's conglomerate making some of the largest bets in AI, from Arm to Stargate to OpenAI.
SoftBank Group is the Japanese investment conglomerate led by Masayoshi Son that has become one of the biggest financiers of the AI era. It owns a majority of chip-architecture company Arm, is a lead partner in the OpenAI-anchored Stargate infrastructure program, and has made enormous direct investments in OpenAI. Its scale of capital commitment shapes the funding landscape for AI infrastructure.
Founded by Masayoshi Son in 1981, SoftBank evolved from a software distributor into a telecom operator and then a globe-spanning technology investor, most visibly through the Vision Funds. Its history of outsized, concentrated bets — some triumphant, some costly — made it a defining force in technology finance.
In AI, SoftBank's positioning is unusually strategic. Its majority ownership of Arm gives it a stake in the energy-efficient compute powering AI data centers; its role as a lead backer of Stargate commits it to hundreds of billions of dollars of US AI infrastructure alongside OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX; and it has made some of the largest single investments in OpenAI itself.
Son has framed AI, and the pursuit of artificial superintelligence, as SoftBank's central mission, redirecting the group's capital and strategy accordingly. That concentration makes SoftBank both a major enabler of the AI buildout and a barometer of the financial risk it carries.
