Qualcomm is the dominant designer of mobile system-on-chips and wireless modems, and a leader in on-device AI through the neural processing units in its Snapdragon platforms. It powers AI features on billions of phones and PCs, and in 2025 announced a move into the data-center AI inference market with its AI200 and AI250 accelerators, opening a new front against NVIDIA and AMD.

Founded in 1985, Qualcomm built its business on CDMA and later 4G/5G wireless technology, licensing a patent portfolio that underpins modern cellular communication, and on Snapdragon SoCs that power a large share of Android devices. Its edge-AI credibility comes from years of integrating efficient NPUs for on-device inference.

On-device AI is a strategic bet: running models locally on phones, PCs (via Snapdragon X), cars, and headsets avoids cloud inference cost and latency, and Qualcomm positions its NPUs as the efficient path for that workload. Its automotive and IoT segments extend the same silicon into new markets.

In late 2025 Qualcomm entered data-center AI with the AI200 and AI250 accelerator lines aimed at inference economics, marking an ambitious expansion beyond its mobile roots into the segment NVIDIA dominates. Its manufacturing depends on TSMC and Samsung foundries.
