Moonshot AI is a Beijing-based lab founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, best known for its Kimi assistant and the open-weight Kimi K2 model line. It first drew attention for extreme long-context capabilities in the Chinese consumer market, then gained global recognition when Kimi K2 — a trillion-parameter-class mixture-of-experts model released with open weights — posted frontier-competitive agentic and coding results. Alibaba is among its major investors.

Yang Zhilin, a Carnegie Mellon PhD with research stints tied to Google Brain-era language modeling work, founded Moonshot AI in March 2023. Its consumer product Kimi became one of China's most popular AI assistants on the strength of very long context windows, at a time when most models handled only a few thousand tokens well.

Moonshot's pivot to open weights with Kimi K2 in 2025 marked a strategic turn: the trillion-parameter-scale MoE model, and its subsequent reasoning-focused updates, were released openly and quickly adopted by international inference providers, putting Moonshot alongside DeepSeek and Qwen in the top tier of Chinese open-model labs.

The company is backed by Alibaba and other major Chinese investors at a multi-billion-dollar valuation, and competes domestically with DeepSeek, Zhipu, and MiniMax in a fast-moving cohort sometimes called China's "AI tigers." Its research emphasis on agentic behavior and tool use keeps its releases prominent in Western developer benchmarks and router traffic rankings.
