It has expanded from images toward video generation while retaining a small team and a distinctive creative-first identity.

Founded by David Holz in 2021, Midjourney launched its image generator in 2022, initially through a Discord-based interface that built a passionate creative community. Its models became known for a strong, recognizable aesthetic that many users preferred over more literal competitors.

In 2025 it also announced a partnership to bring its technology to Meta's products, extending its reach beyond its own app.
