Character.AI
Consumer platform for conversational AI characters, whose founders returned to Google in 2024.
Character.AI is a consumer platform for creating and chatting with AI personas, which built a large and highly engaged user base around companionship and entertainment use cases. Founded by transformer co-inventor Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, it drew one of the industry's most consequential talent deals in 2024 when Google licensed its technology and brought its founders back.
Founded in 2021 by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, Character.AI let users create and converse with AI characters, tapping into strong demand for open-ended, personality-driven chat. Its users spent unusually long sessions on the platform, demonstrating the pull of conversational companionship.
In August 2024, Google struck a deal to license Character.AI's technology and hire its founders and part of its team — a roughly $2.7 billion arrangement that returned Shazeer, a co-author of the transformer paper, to Google, where he took a leadership role on Gemini. Character.AI continued operating as a product under new leadership.
The company has since focused on safety, particularly for younger users, amid scrutiny of AI companionship apps, while competing with a wave of consumer AI-character and companion products. Its trajectory illustrates both the consumer appetite for conversational AI and the extraordinary value the labs place on founding talent.
